Alameda County is planning to approve a plan to spend $61.6 million for the construction of a 30,000 ft.2 mental health unit at Santa Rita Jail — while over 1,000 beds at the jail are empty, there is no plan for how to staff this extra unit, and there is no description of what type of mental health services would be offered. We believe that the county should be investing its money instead in severely underfunded community mental health services; people should not have to be incarcerated in order to, supposedly, receive mental health services.
